2 years and....

5 110 finger pricks....

3 650 insulin injections....

and countless highs and lows LATER....

we are still hoping and praying for a CURE  for type 1 diabetes!

 october 30th marked adisons 2 year anniversary of living with diabetes.  i know i say this often... but she is such a champion.  people just don't understand the bravery of this little girl.  we are so lucky that she handles life with diabetes as well as she does.

yesterday we recieved news that  the access centre has agreed to provide nursing care for adison on the days that she is in school. a nurse, who's name is linda, will be giving adi her lunchtime insulin injections.  i am sure that this will be a wee bit scary for adi.... the only people that have given her needles thus far are her nanny jen, daddy and i.  but this will allow me a little bit of flexibility when i am working. 

when i went to meet the nurse/linda at the school yesterday, i was happy to discover that she works with my sister at hastings manor and she also provides care to my grandma hamilton.  linda was so impressed with adison and her bravery.... at how well she takes her needles and how confidently and independently she does her glucose checks.

looking back at the last two years, i am reminded of all of the good people we have met, the wonderful healthcare we have recieved and the ache in my heart that yurns for a cure for diabetes... for adison and the millions of people who live with diabetes every hour of every day!

yesterday was adisons halloween party at school... and i was totally disappointed that i was not able to make it to the celebration and the annual costume parade.  the primary classes always dress up and parade through the other classrooms to show off their "spooktacular" costumes.  right before i was about to head out the door to work, adi decided that she didn't want to wear her "planned" outfit and insisted that she would pick something out of her dress up box! thankfully,leslie did get to go, and she emailed me a picture of the "costume" that adison chose... which was also accompanied by the following message...

  ... "Adi had fun today. I only got this photo of her, it was busy. She looked cute in her 'princess outfit' with holes in the armpits, etc... she had the teacher tape them for her. it was funny, she didn't care and was happy to get to dress up. i knew you'd get a chuckle out of what she chose from her dress up box.

  well it was more like "target practice", but it is about as close to bow hunting that matt will get this year! .... there's always next year babe!

famous players put on a red carpet event of highschool musical 3 and the kids were so excited to get tickets to attend the premier event!  luckily the lightfoots were up for a date night so they picked us up and we enjoyed the show together.

as for the movie... the kids enjoyed it for the most part, but the boys did say they were a bit bored at one point.  les and i laughed at some of the "cheesier" scenes... but i would chalk it up as a fun night.  another bonus was that we met up with rhonda and brooke... yay!

after the show k and chloe came back for a sleepover, which was nice... it had been a while since we had done that. so today... the kids are tired, but bopping around the house singing hsm tunes..... even, ben!

just another day

today was just another day.... but one that adi and i got to enjoy together.  i love our one-on one days.  she is a really happy kid and enjoys just hanging out.  if i am cleaning, she will always give a helping hand.  if i am doing laundry, she is doing laundry too.  we rarely have the tv on... and i like it that way.  she has become quite the computer junkie lately though... she can play some mean disney games and would amuse herself for hours if i'd let her!

today we did some shopping for winter supplies, had a lovely visit with great grandma hamilton and then headed home to do one of adison's favourite things.... cook.  meatloaf was on the menu for supper and she was such a big helper....  crushing the crackers, cracking the egg and "smooshing" it all together with her capable little hands.

and the best part was that "her" meatloaf was a success... ben and anna even asked for leftovers for supper tomorrow night, and believe me, that doesn't happen very often.

usually a harried morning... picking out the right outfits, doing the hair just so, making sure to keep yourself neat and clean, practicing your "smile". but this year, i decided to just let them "be".  not to fussy... just them....!

after all, with perfect school pics, what would they have to laugh at years from now?

i was tidying up the house a bit in anticipation of the diabetes walk committee meeting that i am hosting tomorrow night.  i had swept and washed the floors, cleaned the sinks and toilets and even dusted and wiped down the ceiling fan blades.  but when it came time to do the windows (which are in great need of a cleaning)... i stopped myself in my tracks.  hand prints... lovely, tiny, gooey little hand prints.  probably adi's.  i love them!  i don't want to wash them away.  i want to keep them and enjoy them.  for a little while anyway. i'll have lots of time for clean windows.

that's my excuse and i am sticking to it! :)

thanksgiving 2008

some of my favourite parts of this thanksgiving weekend...

of course it was all about family!  

i have so many things to be thankful for... friends; a home that i love, great jobs that allow us to provide for our family and spend as much time as possible with our kids; good health; comfort and stability; love (and lots of it).

this thankgiving i am aware that others are not near as fortunate as we are and i am reminding myself to take nothing for granted.  life may not always hand me lemonade, but when it does, I drink it. i hope to take the time every chance I get to remember the things I am grateful for. and to be thankful.
